Firstly, you need to consider what your server is
  • Minigames
  • Prison
  • PvP
  • Survival
What version?I'd personally reccomend 1.7.2 for starting servers.
Ok, so let's talk about starting your server.

Vanilla is a unmodified (No Plugins) client/server
CraftBukkit is a modified Minecraft server which has support for plugins (servers which use CB:Mineplex,HiveMC and Skyblock).

Vanilla

Firstly, you go to Minecraft.net and then scroll down until you see

Then you make a folder and name it "Your Server Name Here"
Also, you need to port forward for players to join (Tutorial at bottom)
How to setup

Bukkit
Firstly, you download this (Which is CraftBukkit 1.7.2) then you make a text file with this in it:

And name it Start.bat (Make it All Files).
Then a console will open and should look like everything is running okay.
Then connect to your server by "localhost".
How to install plugins
The main part of CraftBukkit, plugins.
These are the basics you need
Essentials
WorldEdit
WorldGuard
You can configure them to your liking (e.g youtube tutorials are a good place to start)
Port Forwading
Firstly, you go into "Command Prompt" and type "ipconfig", scroll up until you see "Default Gateway" then enter the numbers into your browser.(Stay on CMD aswell)
Then look on the back of your router and then type in all the passwords which it needs.
Then (For Virgin) click on Advanced Settings then scroll down to Port Forwading.
Once you have clicked on it then set the rule to TCP&UDP and Start Port and End Port to "25565" and name it "Your Server Name" and the 192.168.0.(number) is your ipV4 address (It's above Subnet Mask) (Put the last number in there) and then click "Add Rule" then "Apply".
Now go onto whatsmyip.org and copy and paste the top IP (that's the IP your friends/players connect with, you connect with localhost)
