Multiplayer World and the Internet

Hello,

I am starting a MC summer camp and wondering if I need the Internet to connect 30 student laptops to a stand alone server computer?All the computers will be connected via ethernet cords. I am getting mixed answers and need clarification. My top priority for my camp is to provide a fast multiplayer world without lag. I appreciate any help you can provide.
