Playing tonight after a super long break

How come I only have 4 crafting spots?
I looked on youtube and I don't see anything and a quick google didn't pop up anything new.

I need a pickaxe something fierce lol!! It's nighttime and I keep getting blown up!! Help please?

You need to make a Crafting Table. You can make it so: place 4 planks in all crafting spots (1 for each spot) and craft it. Then place it in world and click Use button. Congratulations, you made it!
